Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss recent developments and bilateral relations.
During the discussion, Araghchi expressed appreciation for the Sri Lankan government’s assistance in rescuing sailors of the IRIS Dena and facilitating the repatriation of the bodies of its crew and other Iranian naval personnel, according to the Iranian Embassy in Sri Lanka.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also condemned the attack on the IRIS Dena, describing it as an “unprecedented war crime” allegedly carried out by the United States, and accused both the United States and Israel of committing violations against Iran. He stated that Iran would pursue all legal and political avenues to hold those responsible accountable, citing violations of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.
The two ministers also exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties and discussed ongoing regional developments, the embassy said in a statement.
