The Department of Meteorology forecasts intermittent showers today (June 1) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may develop in several areas of the Uva Province and the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa after 1.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

At sea, showers or thundershowers are expected in waters extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle. Winds will be southwesterly with speeds of 30–40 kmph.

Wind speeds may increase up to 55–60 kmph in sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Chilaw via Kankasanthurai and Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota. In other sea areas around the island, winds could reach up to 50 kmph at times.

As a result, sea areas off the coasts from Mullaittivu to Chilaw and from Galle to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas will be fairly rough. Mariners are also warned of temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas during thundershowers.
