The Sri Lankan Government has officially gazetted the Bill for the Twenty Second Amendment to the Constitution, proposing changes to the retirement age of superior court judges and the number of Court of Appeal judges.
According to the Gazette Extraordinary published today (7), the retirement age of Supreme Court judges would be increased to 67, while Court of Appeal judges would retire at 65.
Under the proposed amendment, the Chief Justice would retire upon reaching 67 years of age or completing six years in office, whichever comes first.
The Bill also proposes increasing the maximum number of Court of Appeal judges from 19 to 24.
The Twenty Second Amendment Bill was ordered to be published by the Minister of Justice and National Integration.
