Showers or thundershowers are expected at times today (14) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.
The Department of Meteorology said fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely in some areas.
Showers or thundershowers may also occur in a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the North-Central, North-Western, Central and Southern provinces and in the Mannar District.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Meanwhile, showers are expected in several sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 55–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
These sea areas are expected to be rough at times. Naval and fishing communities engaged in activities in these areas have been urged to remain vigilant.
Other sea areas around the island are expected to be fairly rough at times.
Wave heights may increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
