The Department of Meteorology says atmospheric conditions are becoming favourable for afternoon thundershowers in many parts of Sri Lanka from October 1.
According to the latest forecast, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts, after 1.00 p.m. today (30).
Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is possible at some locations in these areas.
A few showers may occur in coastal areas of the Western Province and in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning, while misty conditions are expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces.
The public has been advised to take adequate precautions against possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Rough Seas Expected in Several Areas
Meanwhile, showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several locations in the sea areas extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.
Winds are expected to be south-westerly, with speeds of 20–30 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to around 45 kmph in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar.
These sea areas may become fairly rough at times, while temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
