Showers or thundershowers are expected across most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 p.m. today, with fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres likely in several areas, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The forecast, issued at 5.30 a.m. on Friday, warned that the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-Western and Southern provinces, along with the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts, could experience heavy rainfall at some locations.
The public has been urged to take adequate precautions against temporary localised strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
Misty conditions are also expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts, during the early morning hours.
Sea Areas and Wind Conditions
Showers or thundershowers are forecast at several locations in the sea areas surrounding the island. Winds are expected to be south-easterly or variable, with speeds of 20 to 30 kilometres per hour.
Sea conditions are likely to remain slight under normal weather conditions. However, during thundershowers, wind gusts could temporarily strengthen to 60–70 kilometres per hour, potentially causing very rough seas.
The public is advised to remain vigilant, follow weather updates and take appropriate safety precautions during periods of heavy rain, lightning and strong winds.
