Showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of Sri Lanka after 1.00 p.m. today (October 12), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Morning showers or thundershowers are likely in some areas of the Ampara, Batticaloa and Mullaitivu districts.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is possible in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Uva and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also expected in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the morning.

Low-Pressure Area Expected Over Bay of Bengal

Meanwhile, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal tomorrow (October 13).

The Department of Meteorology has urged naval and fishing communities to remain alert and closely follow future weather forecasts and advisories issued in connection with the developing weather system.

Strong Winds and Rough Seas During Thundershowers

The Department further forecasts showers or thundershowers at several locations in the sea areas around the island today.

Winds are expected to be north-easterly or variable, with speeds of 20–30 kmph. Sea conditions are likely to remain slight under normal conditions.

However, temporarily strong gusty winds reaching 60–70 kmph and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.

Naval and fishing communities are advised to exercise caution when engaging in activities at sea.
