A low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal today (October 13), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Under the influence of this weather system, rainfall is expected to increase across Sri Lanka and in the deep and shallow sea areas surrounding the island over the next few days.

Showers or thundershowers are forecast at times in most parts of the island today.

Heavy rainfall of between 100 and 150 mm is likely at some locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is also expected at some locations in other parts of the country.

The public is urged to take necessary precautions against possible damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
