The Irrigation Department has reported minor flood levels at three monitoring stations in the Kalu Ganga basin, while several other rivers across Sri Lanka have reached alert levels following heavy rainfall.

According to the department’s river water level and rainfall report issued at 6:30 p.m. on October 26, water levels were rising at Ratnapura, Kalawellawa (Millakanda) and Magura, prompting concerns over possible flooding.

At Ratnapura, the Kalu Ganga rose to 8.20 metres, exceeding the minor flood threshold of 7.50 metres. At Kalawellawa (Millakanda), the river reached 6.50 metres, also reaching the minor flood level.

Meanwhile, the Maguru Ganga at Magura recorded a water level of 4.69 metres, above its alert level of 4.00 metres.

In the Kelani Ganga basin, the water level at Glencourse rose to 15.12 metres, exceeding the alert level of 15.00 metres. Alert levels were also reported at Holombuwa along Gurugoda Oya and Norwood along Kehelgamu Oya, although water levels at both locations were falling.

The Gin Ganga at Thawalama reached 4.10 metres, exceeding its alert level of 4.00 metres, with water levels continuing to rise.

In the Nilwala Ganga basin, the river at Panadugama rose to 5.73 metres, approaching the minor flood threshold of 6.00 metres.

The Attanagalu Oya at Dunamale also exceeded its alert level, reaching 4.10 metres, with water levels continuing to rise.

Meanwhile, the Mahaweli Ganga at Peradeniya remained at alert level, although its water level had begun to recede.

The latest report indicates that several river basins remain vulnerable amid continued rainfall, raising the risk of further increases in water levels.

Residents living in low-lying areas near affected rivers are urged to remain vigilant, monitor official announcements and follow instructions issued by the relevant authorities as the weather situation develops.
