Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Public Health Inspectors have discovered stocks of rotten, mouldy and insect-damaged fruits, including apples, grapes and oranges, during a surprise inspection in Pettah.

Colombo Mayor Vraîe Cally Balthazaar said the inspection was conducted following reports that certain traders were transporting fruits unfit for human consumption in lorries and selling them directly on pavements.

She said legal action would be initiated against those responsible for selling the unfit fruits.

The Mayor clarified that the issue did not involve all traders but warned that the sale of unsafe fruits in Pettah could pose a health risk to consumers across Sri Lanka, as the market supplies produce to many parts of the country.

She further stated that the CMC would continue conducting inspections and take strict action against traders found selling food unsuitable for human consumption.
