Germany: Death of irregular migrants at Moroccan-Spain border ‘shocking’

German Deputy Government Spokesperson Wolfgang Büchner described it as “shocking” that many irregular migrants lost their lives while trying to cross into the Spanish city of Melilla in North Africa from Morocco.

Upon a question at the press conference held in Berlin, Büchner made an assessment about the irregular migrants who lost their lives while crossing the city of Melilla from Morocco.

What happened in Melilla

In the incident that took place on the Moroccan-Spain border in Melilla on the morning of June 24, approximately 1500 irregular migrants from the Moroccan side flocked to the border line with 10 meters high barbed wire fences.

Moroccan police and Spanish authorities accused irregular migrants of flocking to the border in an organized manner and attacking security forces by throwing stones and acid.

The Moroccan government announced that 18 immigrants were killed and more than 100 people were injured, including Moroccan police.

133 of the irregular migrants had passed to Melilla, and it was announced that there were injured people on the Spanish side.

Contrary to the official number given by the Moroccan government, the Moroccan Human Rights Association claimed that a total of 27 people died, including 2 Moroccan police and the rest immigrants, while the Spanish non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras claimed that 37 immigrants died in this incident.
