Kanchana discusses Sri Lanka’s energy sector reforms with U.S. Treasury official

On Monday, June 5, Power & Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary to the Treasury Robert Kaproth had a conversation on Sri Lanka’s ongoing reforms in the energy sector and its commitments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The lawmaker stated in a tweet on Monday, June 5, that the conversation centered on the advancements Sri Lanka had made in the previous 12 months, the difficulties associated with price reforms, the balance sheet restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC), the proposed new Electricity Act, and the support needed for the industry.

Participants in this discussion included Chris Powers, the USAID Chief of Economic Growth in Sri Lanka, Doug Sonnek, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Jerrod Mason, the Director of International Monetary Policy of the U.S. Treasury, Bill Block, the Treasury Attaché, and Daniel Moon, the U.S. Embassy Economic Officer.
