The Colombo High Court today (09) sentenced former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena to four years of rigorous imprisonment in each of four corruption cases filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail also imposed a total fine of Rs. 1.8 million in relation to the cases.
Gunawardena was convicted over corruption charges stemming from his tenure as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board in 2006.
According to the Bribery Commission, he caused a financial loss to the state by procuring vehicles for the institution on a rental basis, an act deemed to constitute corruption under the law.
