Showers Expected in Several Provinces; Rough Seas and Strong Winds Forecast

The Department of Meteorology says several spells of showers are expected today (18) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several locations in the Uva Province and the Mullaitivu, Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against possible damage from localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are also forecast in sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

South-westerly winds are expected to prevail at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar, and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

In addition, winds could reach up to 50 kmph in sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and from Kalpitiya to Galle via Colombo.

The Department warned that sea areas off the coasts from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while sea areas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu and from Kalpitiya to Galle via Colombo will be fairly rough.
