The Department of Meteorology says several parts of the country are expected to experience showers today (July 2), while strong winds and rough sea conditions are forecast in coastal and offshore areas.

According to the latest weather forecast, a few showers are likely in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Strong winds of 40-50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central and North-Western provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

At sea, showers or thundershowers may occur in the waters extending from Kalpitiya to Galle via Colombo. South-westerly winds will prevail with speeds of 30-40 kmph, increasing up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

Winds in the remaining sea areas around the island may strengthen to around 50 kmph at times.

The sea areas off the coasts from Kankasanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas may be fairly rough.

The Department also warned that wave heights could rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
