Showers expected in some parts of Sri Lanka today

Several spells of showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today (13).

According to the Department of Meteorology, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaitivu district after 2.00 p.m.

The public is advised to take adequate precautions against possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, several areas of the sea off the coast from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle may experience showers.

Winds will be westerly to south-westerly at 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, and from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Mannar and Puttalam.

These sea areas may be rough at times, and naval and fishing communities are advised to remain vigilant.

Wave heights may increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota.
