Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today delivered a condolence message in Parliament on behalf of the government, mourning the passing of veteran singer Dr. Nanda Malini, widely revered as the golden voice of Sri Lankan music.
The Prime Minister said she was deeply saddened by the loss of the legendary singer, whose exceptional vocal artistry enriched Sri Lanka’s musical and cultural heritage for nearly eight decades.
She described Dr. Nanda Malini’s death as not only the loss of an incomparable artist, but also the departure of a familiar voice that had accompanied generations of Sri Lankans through moments of happiness and sorrow.
Recalling Malini’s early performances, including “Budu Saadu Mama Sandun Gasak Wennam,” and her entry into cinema music through Ran Muthu Doova under the guidance of Dr. W.D. Amaradeva, the Prime Minister said her voice became a constant presence in homes, schools, festivals and national events.
Amarasuriya noted that many of Malini’s songs were more than works of music, becoming deeply woven into the lives and experiences of Sri Lankans.
She also highlighted Malini’s role as an artist who reflected the social realities of her time. Beyond themes of love and separation, she gave voice to the suffering, fears, hopes and struggles of ordinary people.
The Prime Minister praised Malini for fearlessly speaking out against injustice and advocating peace, coexistence, humanity and social justice. Works such as Pavana and Sathyaye Geethaya, she said, demonstrated the power of art to express society’s pain while inspiring hope for a better future.
Sharing a personal reflection, Amarasuriya recalled that exactly one year ago, she had the opportunity to celebrate Malini’s 82nd birthday and express her respect and affection while listening to her perform in person.
Although Malini’s voice has now fallen silent, the Prime Minister said her songs, artistic legacy and example would continue to inspire generations to come.
Concluding her tribute, Amarasuriya described Dr. Nanda Malini as an immortal figure in Sri Lankan music whose voice was embraced with love by generations.
She extended her deepest condolences to Malini’s two daughters, family members and all Sri Lankans who cherished her music, while wishing the late singer eternal peace.
