A group of Swedish schoolchildren was introduced to Sri Lankan literature and culture through a special programme centred on the Swedish translation of Martin Wickramasinghe’s celebrated children’s novel Madol Doova.
The programme was organised by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm as part of its efforts to introduce young Swedish readers to Sri Lankan literature and cultural heritage.
During the programme, the children learned about the story and characters of Madol Doova, as well as the Sri Lankan traditions and cultural elements reflected in the novel.
Translator Priyanwada M. Banduwardana, who translated the novel into Swedish, read a chapter from the book and engaged the students in an interactive discussion about the story, Sri Lanka and its culture.
The children also took part in a creative drawing session inspired by the novel, allowing them to explore its characters and themes through their own imagination.
The programme concluded with traditional Sri Lankan refreshments and Ceylon Tea, giving the young participants an opportunity to experience aspects of Sri Lankan hospitality and cuisine.
The Embassy said the initiative was part of its ongoing cultural diplomacy efforts to promote Sri Lankan literature and art in Sweden and strengthen people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and Sweden.
