The government has introduced new standardisation and quality control requirements for imported passenger car tyres and pneumatic tyres used in three-wheeled motor vehicles, with the regulations taking effect from January 1, 2027.

The new regulations have been issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance under the Imports and Exports (Control) Act, No. 1 of 1969.

According to Extraordinary Gazette No. 2508/27, dated October 1, 2026, the amendments update the existing Standardization and Quality Control Regulations introduced in May 2024.

Under the new provisions, two additional categories of imported vehicle tyres have been added to Schedule B and will be required to comply with the relevant Sri Lanka Standards (SLS).

These include:

  • Passenger Car Tyres (HS Code 4011.10.90) – SLS 1212: Specification for Passenger Car Tyres.
  • Pneumatic Tyres for Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles (HS Code 4011.90.10) – SLS 1347: Specification for Pneumatic Tyres for Three-Wheeled Motor Vehicles.

The Gazette states that the amended regulations will apply to the relevant goods arriving at any port or airport in Sri Lanka on or after January 1, 2027.

The move is aimed at strengthening quality control and ensuring that imported vehicle tyres meet the prescribed national standards before entering the Sri Lankan market.
