The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning of heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm in several parts of Sri Lanka on Wednesday (October 14), due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance persisting over the Bay of Bengal near the island.

According to the department, cloudy conditions and increased rainfall are expected to continue across the country.

Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are likely in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central and North Western provinces, as well as the Anuradhapura District. Other areas may experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm.

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times in the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western provinces, while rain is likely in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.

The department has urged the public to take necessary precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, misty conditions are expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early morning hours.
