The Department of Meteorology has warned of heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm in several areas of Sri Lanka today (16).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western and Northern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura District.

Showers or thundershowers are also expected in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely in some areas of the Northern, Western and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee districts.

The public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimise potential damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several locations in the sea areas around the island.

Winds will be south-westerly or variable in direction, with speeds ranging from 25 to 35 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50 kmph in the sea areas extending from Negombo to Mullaitivu via Puttalam and Kankesanthurai.

These sea areas may become fairly rough at times. During thundershowers, temporarily strong gusty winds of 60–70 kmph and very rough seas can be expected.

The public and those engaged in maritime activities are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
