Heavy showers and thundershowers are expected across most parts of Sri Lanka from this afternoon (October 20), with rainfall of around 100 millimetres possible in some areas, the Department of Meteorology has warned.

The department said an atmospheric disturbance developing in the lower atmosphere near Sri Lanka is likely to intensify rainfall across the island.

Showers or thundershowers are expected in most parts of the country after 1 p.m., with heavy rainfall of around 100 mm possible at some locations in the Northern, North Central, Central, Eastern, North Western and Uva provinces.

Showers are also likely in parts of the Northern and North Western provinces during the morning hours.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take adequate precautions against possible damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
