The Sri Lanka National Chapter WePOWER has been established with the help of the Asia Development Bank (ADB) and the USAID’s Sri Lanka Energy Project to support the growth of women working in the nation’s local energy sector.

The country chapter is connected to the South Asia WePOWER Network on a regional level.

The US Embassy in Colombo released a statement saying that this World Bank project enhances women’s participation in STEM education in addition to encouraging women in the energy sector.

To promote the national chapter of WePOWER and solicit high-level authorities’ support for its sustainability and success, the launch included a panel discussion and involved power sector stakeholders, including utilities, academia, and professional networks.

According to recent World Bank statistics, women only make up roughly 13% of the workforce in Sri Lanka’s power sector, the embassy added.

According to Christopher Powers, Director of USAID’s Economic Growth Office, “the power sector in Sri Lanka will greatly benefit from workplace diversity and increased participation by women, including in leadership positions.” “Women will be required to fill the increasing talent gap in this industry. Their involvement in technical and professional jobs can significantly increase the effectiveness of the industry.
