International Labor Day was established today (01) after a long battle for the rights and demands of the workforce.
The 137th International Labor Day is being observed today.
In accordance with this, International Labor Day is observed on May 1st in every nation, and celebrations for Labor Day include parades, rallies, and other activities.
In a statement on the occasion of World Labor Day, President Ranil Wickramasinghe notes that we have always fought for the rights of those who work and that by securing their rights and advantages, it is our aim that by building a brighter future where labour is valued appropriately.
The President highlighted that despite efforts by some groups to sow unfounded panic about the Employees’ Provident Fund, the fund set up for working people would not suffer any harm.
The President has also noted that the working people have made a special contribution to help guide the challenges we have faced and overcome to victory throughout history. He has made the point that the working people are the social force that can have a stronger impact on the entire economic process of the country.
While making a statement for May Day, Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, notes that International Labor Day is also a historic day for Sri Lanka’s working class.
