Google has introduced a new account recovery feature that allows eligible users to regain access to their Google accounts by recording a selfie video if they forget their password or lose access to their usual sign-in methods.
The feature enables users to set up a short reference selfie video in advance by following guided head movements. If they are later locked out of their account, they can record another live selfie video, which Google compares with the saved version to verify their identity.
Google said the selfie video is encrypted, stored only with the user’s consent, and can be deleted at any time. By default, it is used solely for account sign-in unless users choose to allow additional uses.
To improve security, Google uses multiple verification measures, including liveness detection and checks designed to prevent impersonation through photographs, pre-recorded videos, or AI-generated deepfakes.
The feature is being rolled out gradually to eligible Google Account users worldwide. It is not currently available for Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, or accounts enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program.
