The central Afghan province of Bamyan, which is hilly, was visited by the UN agency for refugees.

The terrible weather disproportionately affected the poorest and most vulnerable people, including some who had just recently returned to the area after being uprooted by decades of conflict. This winter was the coldest in more than a decade.

Some families are even finding sanctuary in old tunnels since they have nowhere else to go.

Others have borrowed money from their neighbors or taken out loans to cope with Afghanistan’s economic collapse, which has caused food prices to soar.
