Today’s first hearing is set for the Singapore lawsuit filed in an effort to recover damages stemming from the X-Press Pearl shipwreck.

According to Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, the Singapore High Court will hear this matter.

Sri Lanka will be represented in this matter by a Singaporean law firm.

On April 26, the Attorney General’s Office of Sri Lanka reported that a case had been submitted to a Singapore court demanding damages for the harm brought on by the X-Press Pearl accident in Sri Lankan seas.

He continued by saying that the court will eventually be made aware of the compensation sum.

He said that the Marine Environment Protection Authority had been requested to provide a thorough study in support of the reparation request.

The X-Press Pearl catastrophe was Sri Lanka’s biggest maritime accident.

It has had a huge effect on Sri Lanka’s economy, local populations, and delicate coastal ecology.
