Ten criminals, including one on death sentence, are now enrolled in the GCE Ordinary Level 2022/2023 exams, which began today.
According to Chandana Ekanayake, the Department of Prisons’ media spokeswoman, five inmates—including the inmate on death row—are from the Welikada jail and the other five are from the Watareka prison.
Chanadana Ekanayake further stated that the Watareka Prison and New Magazine Prison both have examination centers established up where inmates may take the exams.
The number of inmates taking the GCE Ordinary and Advanced Level exams has significantly increased, according to Chanadana Ekanayake.
The prison spokeswoman noted that this was because of the steps the prison department had made to support inmates who wanted to continue their studies.
