Today, May 31, Dr. Robert Floyd, the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), is expected to fly into Sri Lanka.
Dr. Robert Floyd will meet with senior officials from the foreign affairs ministry, the defense ministry, and the geological survey and mines bureau (GSMB) during his five-day official visit. He will also pay courtesy calls on President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, and Environment Minister Naseer Ahamed.
The establishment of an auxiliary seismological station in Pallekale, Kandy, as part of the International Monitoring System (IMS) to verify compliance with the CTBT was made possible by Sri Lanka’s signing of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty on October 24, 1996, and a Facility Agreement with the CTBTO in June 2000.
The CTBT’s main goal is to outlaw nuclear explosions for everyone, everywhere—on land, in the ocean, and underground.
It is anticipated that the visit would further improve collaboration between Sri Lanka and the CTBTO.
