The Department of Wildlife Conservation in Sri Lanka issued a warning that anyone who feed wild elephants that wander into major roadways next to forested areas may face legal prosecution.
According to the Flora and Fauna Protection Ordinance’s requirements, feeding wild elephants on the road is an infraction, the Department’s Director General, M. G. C. Sooriyabandara,
The department claimed that because people have been feeding wild elephants that have wandered onto major roads, they have developed a habit of coming back to the roads in quest of food.
According to him, as a result, there have been more instances of wild elephants stopping traffic on major roads while looking for food.
