According to State Minister for Primary Industries Chamara Sampath Dasanayake, exports of gems and jewellery have brought in USD 315 million for Sri Lanka in the past few months.

“Through gem exports, we generated a sizable profit of USD 230 million the previous year. Notably, our gem and jewellery exports generated a sizable profit of USD 315 million in the year (2023).

The state minister made a point of highlighting the outstanding export growth rate of 34% that the gems and jewellery sector has shown, which he claimed is supported by reports from the Central Bank, during a press briefing on Tuesday (Aug. 22) at the Presidential Media Centre.

Dasanayake mentioned how important the Gem & Jewellery Authority is to the country’s foreign exchange reserves and how many tactical choices have been made to increase the authority’s revenues.

He said that the new government created a cutting-edge customs clearance system, and he added that each gem shipped is carefully examined to assure the influx of foreign currency.

He claims that the data from the Central Bank supports a stunning 34% increase in export revenue for the Gems and Jewellery Authority.
