In Sri Lanka, World Teachers Day is observed on Friday (06).
“The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage” is the theme for this year.
For more than 4.3 million students in schools, Sri Lanka only has 247,000 government teachers.
The severe scarcity in recent years in Sri Lanka’s teaching profession is a significant problem.
Due to the shortfall of 45,000 teachers, trade unions said there have been significant barriers to conducting academic activities in an orderly manner.
The teacher deficit is being addressed, according to the ministry of education, using a number of ways.
5,450 teachers have been sought after to teach science, maths, and foreign languages at the A/Level.
The Education Ministry also said that 542 academic graduates will be hired for the teaching service, in addition to the 4,000 more teachers who will be hired right away to fill the positions left vacant by the retiring and quitting teachers this year.
