The Sri Lankan government has received consent from the Cabinet of Ministers to move forward with establishing the appropriate legal framework to recognise medical degrees awarded by foreign institutions that are ranked between 1 and 1000 in the world.
A committee led by the Secretary of the Prime Minister was appointed earlier in May with approval from the Cabinet of Ministers. Its duties included developing a national policy for Sri Lanka that included standards and criteria for the recognition of medical degrees awarded by internationally renowned universities as well as making recommendations on how to modify the Medical Ordinance’s provisions to better suit the country’s needs.
As a result, the joint proposal made by the President and the Minister of Health to take the necessary actions to enact the necessary legal arrangements based on the report containing the recommendations of the appointed committee has been approved. This will enable Sri Lanka to accept medical degrees offered by foreign universities that are listed among the international rankings from 01 to 1000.
