An “Amber” warning for strong lightning has been issued by the Department of Meteorology, and it will be in effect until 11.30 p.m. today, November 1.
Severe lightning and thunderstorms are predicted to happen in a number of locations in the Galle and Matara Districts, as well as in the Western, North-Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces.
Certain locations may experience heavy rainfall up to 100 mm, the department says.
During thundershowers, there could be brief, high winds in a specific area. It further stated that the general public is respectfully asked to take appropriate precautions to reduce damages caused by lightning activity.
Furthermore, the pubic have been advised to take the following actions in the event of severe lightning;
• Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees
• Avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms
• Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms
• Avoid using open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats etc.
• Beware of fallen trees and power lines
