Ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip will be discussed
On Saturday, November 11, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is set to serve as the convening host for an emergency session of the Summit of Arab heads of state and government. The 32nd session of the Arab League is being chaired by Saudi Arabia.
The General Secretariat received an official request on Monday from Palestine and Saudi Arabia to hold the summit with the aim of discussing the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, according to Ambassador Hossam Zaki, assistant secretary general of the Arab League. He said that the Saudi and Palestinian memoranda had been distributed to the Arab member states by the General Secretariat.
The fact that the Arab League nations are coming together barely 20 days after the October 22 Arab Summit in Cairo is notable. The state of the Israeli-Hamas conflict was a hot topic of discussion during the Cairo Summit. Among the participants were Iraq, Cyprus, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar. There were also UN representatives in attendance, as well as representatives from Germany and Japan. Representatives for the Palestinians from Greece and Turkey also attended the conference.
Riyadh will likely experience increased security as it hosts the Arab League Emergency Summit. Member state foreign ministers will convene to deliberate on the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas as well as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
Furthermore, the Saudi Cabinet announced that it was carrying out follow-ups on the diplomatic initiatives the Kingdom had made in a number of areas in an effort to find a fair and all-encompassing solution that satisfies the Palestinian people’s aspirations.
The Cabinet was briefed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman about his conversation with US President Joe Biden, during which he reiterated the Kingdom’s position regarding the developments in Gaza.
In its ongoing war with Hamas, Israel launched a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, attacking a refugee camp and killing at least fifty civilians in the process. Israel launched a military retaliation against Hamas for its attacks on settlements outside the enclave, which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 Israelis and over 8,500 Palestinians.
In a statement, the Saudi foreign ministry denounced the attack on the camp and stated that the Saudi Arabia condemns Israel’s military targeting of heavily populated civilian areas. Khalid bin Salman, the defense minister of Saudi Arabia, visited the US on Monday in order to demand an immediate ceasefire.
Finally, it is anticipated that the forthcoming summit in Riyadh will primarily address regional peace initiatives.
