Thousands of people crossed into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on Thursday, with large crowds seen rushing through border gates, climbing barriers, and entering the territory.
Videos shared from Tarajal Beach showed groups of people navigating around breakwaters before making their way toward the border crossing.
In response to the sudden influx, Ceuta’s authorities urged Spain’s central government to declare a national emergency and requested the deployment of the military to help manage the situation.
The latest wave of arrivals follows a recent rise in attempts by migrants to reach Ceuta, many of them by swimming across the border. The incident has drawn comparisons to the May 2021 border crisis, when more than 8,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave over a two-day period.
