A New York jury has ruled that former President Donald Trump must pay $83.3 million for defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll in 2019.

The damages include $18.3 million for compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.
Trump was found to have defamed Carroll and sexually assaulted her in the 1990s. He plans to appeal, calling it a witch hunt.

The compensatory damages account for harm to Carroll’s reputation and emotional well-being, while the punitive damages aim to deter Trump from further comments.

This follows a previous civil trial where Trump was found liable for defamation and ordered to pay $5 million.
