“he Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has initiated legal proceedings against seven individuals, including five staff members of the Motor Traffic Department, for their alleged involvement in registering nearly 400 vehicles without customs clearance, leading to significant financial losses.

The investigation was sparked by the importation of a vehicle, KE-3845, into Sri Lanka without proper customs clearance, resulting in a loss of over Rs. 2,587,500 to the government.

The vehicle was seized by the Bribery Commission, and subsequent investigations revealed a larger scheme involving around 400 illegally registered vehicles, causing a loss of over Rs. 5 billion to the government.

The suspects identified in the fraud are currently under investigation, with legal action being pursued against them.

The investigation highlights the need for enhanced measures to combat organized fraud and corruption within government departments.
