A significant development has unfolded in the ongoing issue concerning Tamil Nadu fishermen, as a court in Sri Lanka has ruled on their recent arrests. According to reports, 20 fishermen from Rameswaram have been released, while two boatmen and one fisherman have been sentenced to six months and one year of jail time, respectively, for repeated offences of poaching.
The arrests occurred following two incidents earlier this month, where 42 fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing along the Palk Bay. The fishermen’s detention prompted widespread condemnation and agitation in Tamil Nadu, leading to appeals from political leaders, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, urging immediate intervention from the Union government.
In response to mounting pressure, the Sri Lankan court’s decision comes as both relief and concern for the affected families and fishing communities. While the release of 20 fishermen offers some respite, the sentencing of three individuals underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the fishing community in the region.
Fishermen leader Jesu Raja emphasized the detrimental impact of such arrests on the livelihoods of fisherfolk and called for the Union government to ensure their safety and security while pursuing their trade.
The families of the fishermen have appealed to both the Union and Tamil Nadu governments for further assistance in securing the release of the remaining detainees and withdrawing the sentences of those convicted.
Meanwhile, a Fisheries Department official has confirmed that the released fishermen will be handed over to Indian High Commission officials for repatriation procedures, with arrangements underway to facilitate their return to Chennai and subsequent journey to their homes.
