India has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking the seventh time the country has secured a seat on the Council.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, announced the news on Wednesday, expressing gratitude to all delegations for their support.
“India was elected to the Human Rights Council for the term 2026–28 @UN for the seventh time today. Thank all delegations for their overwhelming support. This election reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Harish said in a post on X.
The UNHRC, established in 2006, is the principal intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide. Comprising 47 Member States, the Council serves as a multilateral forum to address human rights issues, respond to global emergencies, and recommend measures for improving human rights practices.
In a previous statement, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN emphasized that India’s engagement with the United Nations is rooted in its commitment to multilateralism and dialogue, key principles for addressing shared global challenges.
