Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasooriya extended her heartfelt greetings to Hindus across the world and particularly to the Hindu devotees of Sri Lanka celebrating the Deepavali festival today (October 20).
In her message, the Prime Minister said that Deepavali symbolises the triumph of light over darkness — a fitting reflection of Sri Lanka’s current moment of transition. “At present, Sri Lanka stands at a significant turning point, emerging from a long period of economic and social darkness, as our people hold on to renewed hope and confidence,” she stated.
Dr. Amarasooriya noted that the nation has embarked on a collective journey toward progress and the dawn of a new era, expressing hope that the festival’s light would inspire wisdom and guide the country toward economic revival and reconciliation.
“On this Deepavali day, may the light of the lamps that illuminate homes everywhere guide us toward wisdom that will sprout the seeds of economic revival and reconciliation in society,” she said, urging all citizens to embrace cultural diversity and unity with respect, acceptance, and brotherhood.
Concluding her message, the Prime Minister wished that “the thousands of lamps that light across the nation bring forth the light of faith, harmony, and wisdom into the hearts of all Sri Lankans.”

“I wish to extend my greetings to all Hindus around the world, and especially to the Hindu devotees of Sri Lanka, who are celebrating the Deepavali festival.
The Deepavali festival symbolizes the blooming of light over darkness.
