The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for several low-lying areas along the Deduru Oya valley following heavy rainfall in the catchment regions.
According to the Department, significant rainfall has been recorded in the upstream and midstream areas of the Deduru Oya Basin as of 5.00 a.m. today (October 20). As a result, the Deduru Oya Reservoir, managed by the Department, is currently spilling with a discharge rate of 16,250 cubic feet per second.
Residents living in low-lying areas within the Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura Divisional Secretariat (DS) Divisions have been advised to remain vigilant, as there is a potential risk of flooding.
The Department urged the public and relevant disaster management authorities to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage from rising water levels.
