The Department of Irrigation has reported that approximately 15 reservoirs across the country are currently overflowing due to the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall, raising concerns of potential flooding in downstream areas.

Director General L. S. Sooriyabandara said that six spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened, releasing water into the Kala Oya at a rate of 5,087 cubic feet per second.

Several other major reservoirs, including Siyambalangamuwa, Deduru Oya, Batalagoda, Hakwatuna Oya, and Yodha Wewa, have also reached spilling levels as catchment areas continue to receive significant rainfall.

Authorities have warned that water levels may rise further if adverse weather conditions continue. Residents living in low-lying and downstream areas have been urged to remain alert, follow safety instructions, and be prepared for potential flooding or sudden increases in water flow.
