Sri Lanka’s proposal to position Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) as an alternative hub for major Gulf carriers has been described as “not a bad idea” by aviation analyst Ben Schlappig.

Writing on One Mile at a Time, Schlappig noted that the concept could offer a creative solution for airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, which are facing operational uncertainty amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

“A large, nearly abandoned airport with good geography seems like a decent choice,” he said, highlighting Sri Lanka’s strategic position along key east-west aviation routes.

His remarks follow earlier reports that Sri Lanka has initiated discussions to offer Mattala as a temporary hub for major carriers affected by regional disruptions.

Schlappig added that MRIA’s underutilisation—often earning it the label of a “ghost airport”—could become an advantage if airlines are compelled to seek alternative transit points.

However, he cautioned that several logistical and operational challenges must be addressed, including scaling up ground handling capacity, ensuring adequate aviation fuel supplies, and developing supporting infrastructure such as crew accommodation and catering services.

Sri Lanka is reportedly exploring the proposal as a potential economic opportunity, particularly as the tourism sector faces setbacks due to flight disruptions linked to the Middle East situation.
