Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Forecast Across Parts of Sri Lanka Today

The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers and thundershowers at times today (June 5) in the Western Province, Sabaragamuwa Province and North Western Province, as well as in the districts of Galle District, Matara District, Kandy District and Nuwara Eliya District.

Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is expected in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

A few showers are also likely in the Anuradhapura District.

Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North Central provinces, and in the districts of Hambantota District and Trincomalee District. Other parts of the island may experience fairly strong winds of 30–40 kmph.

The public has been advised to take precautions against possible damage from localized strong winds, lightning and thundershowers.

Sea Conditions

Showers or thundershowers are expected in sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Southwesterly winds will prevail at 30–40 kmph, increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in sea areas from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Winds may reach up to 50 kmph in other sea areas around the island.

The sea areas from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai, Mannar, Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding waters will be fairly rough.

Wave heights could increase to between 2 and 3 metres in sea areas from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Near-shore waters from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle may also experience sea surges.

Fishermen and naval operators are advised to remain vigilant, as temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
