Sri Lanka’s Dengue Cases Exceed 65,000 as Western Province Accounts for Over Half

Sri Lanka has recorded 65,034 dengue cases so far this year, with more than half of the reported cases coming from the Western Province, according to the latest figures released by the National Dengue Control Unit.

The data shows a significant increase in dengue infections during June, with 21,539 cases reported that month. A further 9,654 cases have been recorded in July up to July 8.

Earlier monthly figures include 7,866 cases in January, 5,721 in February, 6,013 in March, 5,651 in April, and 8,590 in May.

At district level, Gampaha recorded the highest number of cases with 13,322, followed by Colombo with 11,347 cases. Together, the two districts account for nearly 38% of the country’s total dengue cases.

Other districts with high numbers of cases include Matara (4,600), Kalutara (4,354), Kandy (3,767), Galle (3,767), and Ratnapura (3,766).

Provincial statistics show that the Western Province reported 34,268 cases, accounting for 52.69% of the national total. The Southern Province recorded 12,071 cases (18.57%), while Sabaragamuwa reported 5,515 cases (8.48%).

Health authorities have reported 45 dengue-related deaths this year, with the case fatality rate standing at 0.07%.

According to Week 27 dengue surveillance data, 175 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas have been identified as high-risk areas, with an average of 2,677 new cases being reported each week.

Health officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites as dengue infections continue to rise.
