The Department of Meteorology says several spells of showers are expected today (10) in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
Showers or thundershowers may also develop at a few places in the Mullaitivu, Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.
Strong winds of 40–50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces, and in the Monaragala, Puttalam, Hambantota, Trincomalee and Mannar districts.
For sea areas, showers or thundershowers are likely in the waters off the coast from Negombo to Galle via Colombo. South-westerly winds will prevail at 30–40 kmph, with speeds increasing to 50–60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds may also reach up to 50 kmph in the remaining sea areas around the island.
The sea off the coast from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times, while other surrounding sea areas may be fairly rough. Wave heights of around 2.0 to 2.5 metres are expected in the sea areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo. The Met Department also warns that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas are possible during thunderstorms.
Meanwhile, an amber-level heat advisory has been issued for eight districts. The heat index, or the temperature felt by the human body, is expected to reach the “Caution” level in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara, Monaragala and Hambantota during the daytime.
The public is advised to stay well hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight where possible, and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
