Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, celebrated for his performances in blockbuster films including Jurassic Park and acclaimed dramas such as The Piano, has died at the age of 78.

His family announced his passing on Monday in a statement shared on his Instagram account, saying he died peacefully in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by loved ones. While no cause of death was disclosed, the family noted that Neill had remained cancer-free after being diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2022.

The statement described his death as sudden and unexpected and expressed gratitude to the medical staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care. The family also requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to Neill, praising his remarkable contribution to Australian cinema and describing him as a thoughtful, dignified and much-loved performer whose legacy will endure.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, Neill moved to New Zealand with his family as a child. He adopted the name “Sam” at the age of 12 before pursuing an acting career after abandoning law studies.

Neill rose to prominence with the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs and went on to star in numerous acclaimed productions, including My Brilliant Career, The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, and the globally successful Jurassic Park franchise, earning a reputation as one of New Zealand’s most respected and versatile actors.
