Two prison officers who were injured during the violent clashes at Negombo Prison and were receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital have died, police confirmed.
The officers, aged 25 and 39, passed away yesterday (13) and early today (14), respectively.
Their deaths bring the number of prison officers killed in the unrest to ten.
Police said 21 inmates also lost their lives in the clashes that erupted inside Negombo Prison on July 5 and 6. With the latest fatalities, the overall death toll has risen to 31.
Several other injured prison officers and inmates remain under treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and Negombo Hospital.
