The Department of Meteorology says mainly dry weather will prevail across most parts of Sri Lanka today (20), with only a few areas expected to experience afternoon showers or thundershowers.
According to the latest forecast, isolated showers or thundershowers may occur after 2.00 p.m. in the Ampara and Monaragala districts.
Strong winds of 40-50 kmph are expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North Central, Central and North Western provinces, and the Ratnapura, Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
Meanwhile, a few showers are also possible in the sea areas off the coast stretching from Negombo to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
South-westerly winds will prevail over the sea at speeds of 30-40 kmph. Wind speeds may increase to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar, and from Hambantota to Pottuvil.
Winds may also strengthen to around 50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu.
The sea areas from Kalpitiya to Kankasanthurai via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be rough at times, while the seas from Trincomalee to Kankasanthurai via Mullaitivu may be fairly rough.
Fishermen and naval communities are advised to exercise caution while venturing into these sea areas.
